Job Description

Research Study Assistant - Northwestern University (MED?Neurology Department)

Salary/Grade: NEX/9 Target hiring range: $19.00$21.30 per hour.

Job Summary

Performs biomedical and social?behavioral research by administering tests and questionnaires following protocols, collecting, compiling, tabulating responses, gathering information, assisting with report material, and strictly following Good Clinical Practices (GCP) and all relevant regulations.

Responsible for conducting sleep studies (Polysomnography) according to AASM criteria for clinical trials and other sleep/circadian research. Conducts neurobehavioral and cognitive test batteries and other tasks as required. Work schedule varies: weekend, evening, overnight, early morning shifts.

Specific Responsibilities


  • Recruits study participants.
  • Reviews & obtains informed consent.
  • Schedules study visits with participants.
  • Conducts interviews.
  • Scores test results.
  • Collects survey data.
  • Reviews medical records.
  • Consults with nurses & physicians to determine pretreatment & eligibility requirements of protocol from completion to registration of participants.
  • Facilitates communication with key personnel & participants to maintain project study flow.


  • Maintains detailed records of results (including data entry and basic charts & graphs).
  • Performs scientific literature searches in support of research.
  • Completes portions of grant applications & documents associated with protocols and regulatory guidelines.


  • Processes reimbursements for travel expenses.
  • Monitors & distributes petty cash.
  • Coordinates fund distribution among multiple sponsors and clinical sites.


Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications


  • Successful completion of a 4?year degree in a social or health science or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience with 2 years of research study or relevant experience.
  • Must complete NU's IRB CITI training before interacting with participants and re?certify every 3 years.

  • Proficient with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience with Polysomnography, EEG, or sleep research.
  • Experience working overnight, weekend, and irregular hours.
  • Experience in academia, research, or medical industry.
  • Programming experience (MATLAB, Python, R, etc).


Preferred Competencies
  • Computer proficiency in FSM/NU systems.
  • Experience setting up and performing Polysomnographic studies.
  • Phlebotomy.
  • Coding/programming.
  • Current CPR/BLS certification.
  • Proficiency with REDCAP.
  • Current research privileges with affiliated clinical institutions (i.e., NMH) are strongly preferred.
